2018/9/15 Vissel Kobe 1-2 Gamba Osaka
Vissel Kobe 1-2 Gamba Osaka
Vissel went into this match looking to arrest a recent slump that had seen them drop from championship contenders to struggling to be top three contenders, and the result of this match did not help their cause as they went down 2-1 at home to Kansai neighbours, Gamba Osaka.
Kim Seung-gyu was in action as early as the 3rd minute, denying Hwang Ui-jo a goal after he was set up by a smart flick from former Vissel favourite Kazuma Watanabe on the edge of the area. It wasn't long, though before the opposing goalkeeper was called into action as Andres Iniesta got his first shot of the night in on six minutes.
Watanabe himself then sent in a blast from over 25 yards that forced Kim to give away a corner in the 30th minute, but less than five minutes later Vissel were ahead through Kyogo Furuhashi and Vissel took that lead into the half time break. Gamba equalised seven minutes into the second half after a passing move down the Vissel left saw a deep cross volleyed home by Shu Kurata, 1-1, and all to play for, but Vissel were caught napping again to go behind after a low left wing cross found Hwang unmarked yards out of goal and his simple finish doomed Vissel to another defeat.
There was still time for Wellington to get on the end of a So Fujitani cross to acrobatically bicycle kick goalwards with 10 minutes to go, but the shot was wide, though well-received by the hopeful home crowd.
